FAMILY KITCHEN

Design Challenge:

This kitchen design is for a family of four in their family home in a Boston, Massachusetts suburb. Incorporating technology, functionality, and transitional design elements will be imperative in the clients satisfaction. These high-end unique elements will be introduced through design only, without moving any structural walls, entrances, or windows.

space planning

Original Floor Plan

The original kitchen design had a lot of inset spaces, and was a fairly long room. Other obstacles were the angles on each side of the kitchen sink being different, as well as the window not being centered on the interior wall.

Functionality

Structure and purpose are other top priorities in this space. The family needs each drawer, appliance, and the overall layout to be used to its fullest potential. In addition to the traditional function of a kitchen, the room will be a space where the children can complete homework, hang out with friends, and where the family can eat breakfast together. An informal dining space will be placed near the larger window in the room, so the family has a clear line of sight into their wooded backyard and flower garden.

A pantry will be built into the space to conceal dry-storage food and snacks. Highly organized storage will be important for quick grab-and-go easily accessible items.

Another key feature in the kitchen is a command center, where each person can monitor upcoming events, chores, and charge their devices. The family leads very structured lives, so having a place for everything, including their devices is important.
